Lelo Lyla 2

Review of the Lelo Lyla 2, remote-controlled vibrating egg

on

We had the chance to try out the Lelo Lyla 2, a remote-controlled vibrating egg. It’s the first time we’ve tested this type of sex toy on this blog, but it probably won’t be the last.

Lelo Lyla 2 vibrating egg

At first glance, the Lyla 2 seems to have quite a lot in common with the Tiani 2, a couples’ vibrator from the same brand, which we reviewed recently.

So this gives us a chance to compare the two sex toys. But also, and above all, to see whether the Lyla 2 lives up to what we expect from a vibrating egg. This type of erotic accessory should be usable discreetly—that is, without making a noise and with a decent range.

The sex toy

Appearance

The Lelo Lyla 2 comes in two parts: the egg and its remote control.

Lengthwise, it’s about as long as the width of my palm, and I can hold it in my closed fist with only the metal end sticking out.

For those who prefer actual measurements: it’s about 7.5 centimetres long and 3 cm in diameter at its widest point.

The remote control is identical to the one that comes with the Tiani 2. In fact, the two remotes are interchangeable with no problem.

The model we received is purple, but it’s also available in fuchsia and black.

Texture and materials

The Lyla 2 and its remote control are made of medical-grade silicone, with a very soft surface.

A thin, smooth metal layer covers the ABS plastic end of the egg (the “cap” over the place where you plug in the charger) and the battery compartment of the remote control.

Run your finger over the object and you can clearly feel the join between the two materials. However, there’s no risk of hurting yourself on it; it’s still fairly smooth. Lubricant and other fluids have a nasty tendency to get caught there, but it’s not particularly difficult to clean: you just need to unscrew it.

Power

The power system is the same as the one used by the Tiani 2.

The egg is rechargeable. You can also swap the chargers between the Tiani 2 and the Lyla 2.

To charge it, you need to unscrew it to separate the silicone part from the metalised “lid”. Underneath, you’ll find the little charging port to plug the charger into. The mechanisms are still well out of sight; you can’t see them, which is a good sign. As far as watertightness goes, it looks pretty well made.

For cleaning, when the thing is closed, you can rinse it under water without any problem. If it can squat in a vagina without worrying about moisture, it can certainly go under a tap.

But to clean the join properly, after unscrewing it, I’d still recommend taking care not to get water in the charging port, and leaving the sex toy to air-dry for a little while before screwing it back together.

Powering the remote control

The remote control runs on batteries (two AAA batteries), and it has the same opening mechanism, which you either need to get the hang of or tackle with the little tool provided.

Controls and modes

The modes are the same as those on the Tiani 2, so I’ll copy and paste what I noted about them in my Tiani 2 review:

Sensitive to movement, the remote control increases and decreases the vibration intensity depending on how you move it. There are two modes, called “SenseMotion”, which behave differently:

  • In the first, which is quite intuitive, you hold the remote horizontally if you don’t want any vibrations, and tilt it to varying degrees to adjust the vibration intensity as you like.
  • In the second, you have to spin the remote as fast as you can to increase the vibration intensity. What’s the point of this mode? Wrist-muscle training? A silly game for long winter evenings? I really don’t see. It’s very funny, but not exactly erotic.

There are also more conventional modes, six in total, where you simply choose the intensity using the “+” and “−” buttons:

  • A continuous mode,
  • Two regular pulsing modes at two different speeds,
  • Two modes with varying intensity (in “waves” and “sawtooth” patterns),
  • A mode that seems random.

A button marked with two arrows “biting each other’s tails” lets you select the mode.

Using the Lelo Lyla 2

As a regular vibrator

Used on the clitoris like a regular vibrator, THE Lelo Lyla 2 is very effective.

When I switched it on, I wasn’t expecting it. Its vibrations are very powerful for its size, and yet you can barely hear them.

They travel deep and make it easy to reach orgasm quickly. The softness of the surface helps too.

The egg is quite small and portable, so it makes a perfectly decent mini-vibrator. Without its remote control, it’s actually shorter than the Lelo Mia, although its charger takes up a little more room, and it’s a bit more powerful.

Its main purpose: as a vibrating egg

The main purpose of a vibrating egg is to be used in fun situations. On a night out, for example, worn discreetly inside the vagina while a partner operates it remotely with the control.

Worn like this, it won’t make you come (then again, unless you have an ultra-sensitive pussy, an object that just vibrates inside the vagina without moving in and out rarely makes you come), but its main purpose is to turn you on.

Insertion and removal

It’s easy to insert: it’s smooth and soft, although a water-based lubricant may help. To remove it, just pull gently on its cord.

Remote control range

With the Tiani 2, when it’s worn during penetration, the remote control’s range seems like a rather superfluous gadget. With the Lyla 2, though, we have to be much more demanding.

There’s no need for it to work at a distance of 10 kilometres, but once it’s inside the vagina (which, after all, has good reason to affect the results compared with measurements taken “in the open air”), you shouldn’t have to press the remote against the wearer’s bottom to make it work.

So we decided to check the remote control’s range once the egg was in place. The verdict: several good metres. Roughly five metres by our estimate, with the corner of a wall in between. More than enough to make it fun.

Noise level

When it’s being worn, the egg itself is very quiet. In a completely silent room, you can just about hear a faint hum if you’re very close. At a metre’s distance, you can’t hear anything at all.

The remote control vibrates

On the other hand, when the remote control vibrates in the hand of whoever’s holding it, you can hear it distinctly.

It’s not a fanfare, but I wouldn’t call it discreet. The remote control vibrates gently, but without a hand there’s nothing to muffle the sound. With no background noise, you can tell there’s something vibrating in your hand, and it doesn’t sound like a phone.

Can you switch off the remote control’s vibrations?

With the “classic” modes, you can switch off the remote control’s vibrations. To do this, simply press and hold the button marked with a double arrow until the remote control stops vibrating, which takes a few seconds. You can then see the vibration frequency from a flashing LED on the remote control.

The SenseMotion modes, on the other hand, don’t have a “non-vibrating remote control” mode. That’s not a problem in itself, because while these modes can be great fun for playing together (not exactly sexy, as I said earlier, but still fun), waving your wrist around all over the place when you’re out and about wouldn’t be a great start if you’re trying to be discreet.

Modes poorly designed for discreet use

However, one downside I’d point out with the Lyla 2 is that its modes aren’t necessarily very well organised to make discreet use easier.

After being switched off, the egg always reboots to the first SenseMotion mode. In which the remote control vibrates, of course. So every time, you have to “skip” through to a classic mode, then hold down the central button for a few seconds to switch off the remote control’s vibrations. Which still leaves us with a few unavoidable seconds of “bzzz!”.

In theory, you can make sure the unwanted noise happens very rarely—or even just once, if you get it absolutely per-fect-ly right. But with all these modes, getting everything exactly right is pretty complicated… Enough to spoil the fun.

The other option is to use it somewhere noisy enough that you can get away with the remote making a few “bzzz!” sounds from time to time. In a bar, fine; during dinner with Aunt Hortense, not fine.

Conclusion on the Lelo Lyla 2

The good points:

  • The vibrations are powerful and provide stimulation that gets results. What’s more, the Lyla 2 also works as a “regular” clitoral vibrator, letting you come without too much effort.
  • The egg’s vibrations are almost inaudible: once the vibrator is in place, even in a completely silent room, you can only hear a faint, almost imperceptible background noise if you’re very close.
  • Good range for the remote control.
  • The object’s overall quality, which no longer surprises me much from a Lelo sex toy. But it’s still a pleasure to have an object with a pleasant texture, that’s sturdy, keeps moisture out and has a long-lasting battery.

The bad points:

  • Just one drawback: the way the modes are organised, combined with the fact that the remote control vibrates in some modes, isn’t very straightforward or practical. If you don’t get the button press exactly right, you risk the remote control vibrating unexpectedly. And since it’s in your hand, you’re more likely to notice it.

In brief

The Lelo Lyla 2 would be perfect for me if its remote control didn’t vibrate.

It’s a shame: this feature, along with the SenseTouch modes, is supposed to be an advantage, and I find it amusing on the Tiani 2. On the Lyla 2, though, it bothers me more than anything. The gimmicky features on this remote control don’t really suit what I’d like to do with a vibrating egg. A simpler, non-vibrating remote control—and perhaps a smaller one too—would be very welcome.

Apart from that, everything else is great. The quality is impeccable: the Lyla 2 is sturdy and soft, and its remote control works at a decent distance, while the egg itself produces powerful vibrations without making a sound.
