Body Wand Midnight vs Fairy Mini: the comparative test

on

Les ultra-powerful vibrators often look so similar that it can be a bit difficult to choose one. But they’re not all the same. So, let’s compare two of them: the Body Wand Midnight and the Fairy Mini 230 V.

And since these aren’t the only ultra-powerful vibrators we have to hand, we may as well compare them with the big brother of the Body Wand Midnight, the classic Body Wand.

The ultra-powerful Body Wand Midnight and Fairy Mini vibrators

Let’s see whether there are any noticeable differences between the two, and if so, what they are!

Unboxing the two sex toys

The two vibrators come in fairly similar packaging. They’re cardboard boxes with an image of the sex toy on the front. The Fairy Mini’s packaging is a smidge smaller than the Body Wand Midnight’s, and the designs are different: pink for the Fairy, black and white for the Body Wand Midnight.

But there’s no need to dwell on them: these boxes are disposable.

Let’s open them quickly and focus on what’s inside.

Fairy Mini: a storage pouch

The Fairy Mini comes with a soft pink pouch made of Care Bear fur, while the Body Wand Midnight is completely naked.
The pouch itself is nothing outrageously special, but it’s really practical and lovely to have one included.

What the Body Wand Midnight and Fairy Mini look like

With exactly the same shape and the same dimensions (25 centimetres long, with a head 4.5 centimetres in diameter), the two sex toys differ only in colour.

Well, and sort of the shape of their plugs too, admittedly. But unless you’re passionate about electrical plugs, let’s just say it’s pretty insignificant.

For comparison, the classic Body Wand (the sky blue one in the centre of the photo) is 32 centimetres long, with a head 5.5 centimetres in diameter.

Lots of people know the Fairy, in white and pink, with its look straight out of a karaoke party in Polly Pocket’s world. It’s cute, but it’s kitsch.

Comparative test of the Body Wand Midnight and Fairy Mini

Fairy and Body Wand Midnight

The Body Wand Midnight, on the other hand, is plain black. In short: classier. In the category of corded, ultra-powerful vibrators, it’s the only black one I know of. The design innovations haven’t gone beyond the colours, though, and it’s a long way from the design of LELO’s Smart Wand, but it’s already much more understated than the Fairy. And that’s a good thing, as far as I’m concerned.

Texture and material

Both sex toys are made of hard plastic. For the Fairy Mini, it says “30% ABS, 70% plastic”. The Body Wand Midnight doesn’t say, but there’s a good chance its ingredients are the same as those of the original Body Wand: “TPR and plastic”.

TPR and ABS are both non-porous materials that are safe for the body. “Plastic” doesn’t really mean much, but given their hard texture, there’s no reason for the Fairy or Body Wand to contain phthalates. Besides, there’s no more reason to worry than there is about the other plastic objects that fill our everyday lives.

So, both sex toys are hard, but their accordion-style necks are flexible, which absorbs movement.

Power supply for the Body Wand Midnight and Fairy Mini

The Body Wand Midnight and Fairy Mini 230 V plug into the mains (mind you, given its name, it would be genuinely strange if the “two hundred and thirty volt” Fairy ran on batteries). Note that rechargeable models are also available from Fairy and Body Wand, probably less powerful, but I won’t speculate about what I don’t know.

The pros and cons of a corded power supply are pretty obvious. On the plus side, no laborious hunt for batteries and no “surprise, the sex toy’s battery is flat!”. On the downside, you absolutely need a plug socket nearby… And above all, don’t handle water (or fruit juice, mind) or have any lying around (unless you fancy ending up as a roast, which is rather inconvenient).

The Fairy Mini’s plug is as standard as they come. The Body Wand Midnight’s comes apart into two pieces. If you unplug the European adapter, you’ll find a Japanese plug (or at least, I’m pretty sure it’s Japanese: 110 V. The fact that it was designed in Japan and Google seem to confirm this theory). But, as I said earlier, unless you’re an electrical-plug aficionado, we couldn’t give a toss about all that.

Controls

The vibration strength of both sex toys is adjusted with a dial, which controls a potentiometer. It’s very simple and handy for playing around with the intensity: starting gently and then gradually increasing it, turning it down for a few moments before picking up the pace again, and so on…

It makes the sensations more interesting, by stopping you getting numb and “getting used to” the strength of the vibrations. It also means you can start stimulating yourself again very gently shortly after orgasm, while your clit is particularly sensitive.

So, Fairy and Body Wand Midnight are joint winners when it comes to the controls. They also tie with the classic Body Wand, which works in the same way. All three beat the Palm Power Massager, with its slightly annoying single button that can only increase the power and doesn’t always quite understand whether you want to switch it off or turn it up.

Power: the Fairy Mini vibrates more strongly

In the end, there really is a marked difference between these two competitors—there’s no doubt about it: the Fairy Mini is far more powerful than the Body Wand Midnight.

Well, both sex toys vibrate very strongly. But the Fairy Mini vibrates even more strongly. You can tell the difference as soon as you switch them on, before you’ve even tried them, by placing them against the palm of your hand at maximum power.

The Mini Fairy is as powerful as the classic Body Wand (the full-sized one). At this level of power, it’s quite difficult to compare them accurately. Trying them one after the other skews the results in favour of whichever one you use second. And if you leave a long enough break between using them for your clit to calm down, you don’t remember exactly how intense one sex toy felt by the time you test the other.

So the most reliable method is to place the head of one vibrator in the palm of each hand. You can then see that the Fairy Mini and classic Body Wand are in the same ballpark in terms of intensity, although the sensation is different because the contact area is a different size. You notice that during use, too.

To sum up the question of power, I think it’s quite an achievement for the Fairy Mini, given that it’s much smaller than the classic Body Wand. The Body Wand Midnight is also very, very powerful, but there’s no question that it’s less powerful than the Fairy Mini.

Noise level

There’s a logo on the Body Wand Midnight’s packaging that says “Whisper quiet”. Admittedly, it’s quieter than the Fairy Mini. But I wouldn’t go so far as to call it “whisper quiet”.

Let’s say the Fairy Mini sounds like a noisy blender, while the Body Wand Midnight brings to mind a fairly quiet modern blender… But still a blender.

Well, perhaps I’m exaggerating with the blender comparison (it’s hard to judge, I don’t own a blender), but you’ll hear it from the next room with the door closed. I think it makes much the same sort of noise as an electric epilator.

Effectiveness

Fairy Mini or Body Wand Midnight, I reach orgasm very (very) quickly with either of the two vibrators. And as often as I like (provided I slather my clit in lubricant beforehand—let’s not be ridiculous), since it’s over too quickly for the friction to have time to become uncomfortable. And on demand, thanks to the dial, which lets me choose the exact moment I want the intensity to shoot up and trigger an orgasm.

For me, that’s not where the differences between these two sex toys lie. But my clit is far from being one of the most stubborn. If you’re not sure what yours needs, don’t hesitate: choose the Fairy Mini. If the Barbie pink really bothers you and a vibrator that’s “only” very, very powerful (but clearly less so than the Fairy) is enough for you, go for the Body Wand Midnight.

For me, when it comes to an ultra-powerful vibrator, being rough enough to make me come quickly isn’t optional. And the Fairy Mini and Body Wand Midnight both deliver brilliantly on that front (at least, according to my clit).

But, if you’re going to have a device whose purpose is to vibrate very, very strongly, and the dimensions and operation are identical, I’d rather it vibrated as strongly as possible. It’s more fun, if only for the pleasure of being able to crank up the intensity even further. And it works every time, even when your clitoris has decided to be a pain and sulk.

So the Fairy Mini wins the most important round of the match: it’s the more powerful one. The difference is tangible and certain.

Conclusion: Body Wand Midnight or Fairy Mini?

Let’s tally up the points:

For the Body Wand Midnight:

  • Looks-wise, it’s classier.
  • It’s quieter.

For the Fairy Mini:

  • It’s more powerful, without a doubt. Which is (at least for me) the most important point.
  • A storage pouch is included. That’s appreciated too.

We’re looking at two lovely sex toys that are similar in quite a few ways. Which one comes out on top depends entirely on which of their differences you prioritise.

From my point of view, whatever the object looks like, that comes second to how well it works… Especially when the only difference in appearance is the colour. Power is the most important criterion.

I like them both, but the Fairy Mini is definitely my favourite. And it comes with a pouch, too.
