CES 2020: sex toys at the high-tech trade show

on

For the first time, the Consumer Electronics Show welcomed manufacturers of connected vibrators to its high-tech trade show in Las Vegas. And not only did CES 2020 put sex toys in the spotlight, but two vibrators featured on the list of nominees for the innovative gadget of the year award!

CES 2020 took place from 7 to 10 January.

The lucky nominees are the Onda, a G-spot vibrator, and the Baci, a suction clitoral stimulator, from the Lora Dicarlo brand. Both use micro-robotics to deliver surface caresses, combined with vibrations or suction.

Among the other high-tech adult toy brands, some names are familiar, while others are less well known.

Among others, there was Crave, a luxury vibrator brand whose toys are worn as jewellery.

And OhMiBod, known in particular for the BlueMotion and the Fuse.

As well as Satisfyer, with its suction and pulsing vibrators, masturbators and, more recently, its “classic” vibrators.

And Lovense, with its connected vibrators, including the Lush.

Among the less well-known brands is the Come Play Petl, a U-shaped vibrator worn with one end inserted into the vagina and the other pressed against the clitoris, like a We-Vibe.

And Mystery Vibe, with the Crescendo, the Poco and the Tenuto, connected vibrators that can be reshaped.

As well as XR Brands, a brand behind numerous BDSM accessories and sex toys, including the Booty Sparks, a glowing anal plug.

And Lioness, with a smart connected rabbit vibrator that captures data on the body’s reactions to stimulation, allowing them to be viewed in real time or analysed.

Sex tech at CES 2020

The combination of sexuality and technology doesn’t just produce sex toys.

Among the exhibitors was Morari Medical, which designs a wearable device for the penis, intended to combat premature ejaculation.

And Pulse, with a lubricant dispenser that dispenses fluid warmed to the ideal temperature.

Controversy over sex toys last year

Last year, sex toys received a much less enthusiastic reception at CES 2019. The sex toy brand Lora DiCarlo was first given an Innovation Award for its robotic vibrator, the Osé, then had it withdrawn, its product having been deemed obscene and indecent.

This injustice provoked public outrage. And the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the organiser of CES, eventually gave Lora DiCarlo its award back. The sex toy brand secured a well-placed stand at CES 2020, and its founder, Lora Haddock, gave a talk there.

A compulsive sex toy collector whose stash now dwarfs my wardrobe, I review every new toy with a critic's sharp eye.
