Evatar is a robot with a menstrual cycle. Reading this title, I first thought it was about a statue leaking a red liquid every month, somewhere deep in the back of a modern art museum. But reality is more science fiction than I had imagined. In fact, Evatar is a cyborg female reproductive organ.
A menstrual cyborg
More precisely, Evatar is a box containing living human cells. These cells are distributed across an assembly of tubing and miniature robotic organs, modelling a vagina, a uterus, a cervix, fallopian tubes and a liver.
The cells, kept alive over the 28 days of a menstrual cycle, are nourished by a blue liquid. This circulates through the tubes, from one organ to another, and serves as blood.
Like the heroine of a sanitary pad ad, Evatar therefore has blue periods.
The purpose of such a robot is to serve as a guinea pig in studies on the reproductive system. A male version is also planned.
