We came across Idée du Désir recently, when the artisan behind the brand contacted us.
As a cabinetmaker, he recently decided to get into the design of wooden sex toys sculpted. He is only just getting started, but has a lot of potential and ideas.
He suggested we test a wooden dildo, theOrchidée, which can be admired in the photo above, one of Idée du Désir’s first sex toys. When we received the Orchidée, we were impressed and rather surprised by its very high apparent quality.
So I called its creator to find out more.
How did you get into making sex toys?
Idée Du Désir : I am a craftsman, a cabinetmaker for several years. I really love working with wood. With the economic crisis, I started considering diversifying my activities.
I had this idea in early February. I had heard about wooden sex toy makers, like Nobessence. Yet I felt perfectly capable of making this kind of sculpture. Knowing that there were not that many wooden sex toy makers in France, I decided to take the plunge.
I then made my first wooden sex toys. My wife tried them, and she liked them. So I created my website to promote my sculptures.
How is an Idée Du Désir sex toy made?
Each Idée Du Désir sex toy is entirely made by hand. A sex toy is about an hour of work.
I start from a single block of sawn wood, which I carve with a chisel. Then I polish it to smooth its surface. Finally, I coat it with a food-safe varnish .
To find inspiration when designing the object, I imagine the woman who will use it and the pleasure she will get from it, it is quite carnal…
Which woods do you use?
I only use top-quality wood: carefully selected blocks of walnut , cherry, and pear.
At the moment, only French woods. But I am perhaps considering, in the future, making more luxurious models with exotic woods.
How do you make the ‘checkered’ wooden sex toys that can be seen on your website?
The Arlequin models are made from two interlaced woods. This is a common technique in marquetry.
I glue 9 millimetre by 9 millimetre strips together to form a block, then I leave this block to dry in a press. Once dry, the assembly is as solid as wood, and I can sculpt into it.
Any projects concerning Idée Du Désir?
Of course, I am going to design other models of wooden sex toys. I have a number of sculpture projects in progress *. I would also like to offer a customisable order module to create a sex toy that really suits its future owner.
I am also planning to find a box, to present my sculptures better.
(*) Since then, we have had a bit of a discussion by email about this, and I suggested a few ideas that seemed to inspire him. But I won’t say any more for the moment, it’s top secret…
