We’ve just received the Holy Grail the Smart Wand Medium from Lelo.
I really wanted this sex toy. I mean, really, really wanted it.
The Smart Wand is a clitoral vibrator with a look reminiscent of an ultra-powerful thing like the Fairy, the Body Wand and the rest. But it’s made by Lelo, a brand known for the excellent quality of its products. A combination that seemed more than promising.
Enough chit-chat, let’s test the Smart Wand.
Packaging
The outer box
The packaging is very understated. The brand, a picture of the toy, and a woman in a dressing gown pretending to massage her neck and ankles with a Smart Wand.
The box
There’s no need to introduce Lelo sex toy boxes. Pretty, sturdy, and impossible to imagine throwing away for even a second.
The Smart Wand’s box is longer than the Iris’s, but a little flatter.
When you open it, you find the sex toy, a cute little brooch, and a compartment hiding the charger and the pouch.
The brooch
The Lelo brooch is a discreet piece of jewellery, with a design that doesn’t give anything away.
However, the brand is quite well known, and you’re unlikely to want to advertise which sex toys you use on your clothes. And if your Auntie Hortense’s cardigan is decorated in the same way, it could lead to an awkward conversation.
In short, the brooch is pretty, but you probably won’t wear it. In any case, it’s just a gadget to decorate the box, and it does a splendid job of that. Its clasp tends to open by itself, but who cares: what we’re interested in is the vibrator.
The warranty
Like all Lelo products, the Smart Wand comes with a one-year warranty, and a 10-year “quality guarantee”.
This second guarantee lets you buy a product at half price on the manufacturer’s website if a Lelo sex toy dies a natural death between 1 and 10 years after purchase.
The pouch
A soft, practical black satin pouch is included for carrying the sex toy.
The sex toy
Dimensions
The Smart Wand Medium is significantly smaller than its corded counterparts : the Hitachi Magic Wand, the Fairy, the Body Wand, and so on.
It measures just 22 cm long, and its head is 4 cm in diameter.
Texture and materials
The Smart Wand’s surface is made of silicone, apart from the shiny part of the handle, which is made of ABS plastic.
So it contains no harmful substances.
As for precautions: avoid using silicone-based lubricant with this sex toy, as it could damage it.
The sex toy’s handle is rigid, but it’s only the head we’re interested in, since it’s intended for external use only. Its head is rigid, but its neck is flexible. It’s not meant for contortions, just enough flexibility to soften the contact.
Its surface is very soft, like “peach skin”.
Charging
Charging takes two hours, which is fairly quick. Once charged, the sex toy can run for two hours.
The charger is a tiny power adapter. It takes up very little space, so you can carry it in the pouch with the Smart Wand.
The Smart Wand is advertised as completely waterproof, and the instructions say you can use it in the bath. So you can be sure it won’t die on the spot the first time it’s dipped in water.
The silicone covering the surface of its head, neck, buttons and part of its handle is all in one piece, with no gap where it joins the shiny plastic part.
However, you might wonder whether, in the long term, the metal charging socket could rust if you don’t dry it properly between uses in water.
In any case, cleaning is no problem. Just wash the head of the sex toy with soap and water.
Controls and vibration settings
The Smart Wand has 3 buttons: a “+”, a “-”, and a central button with two arrows chasing each other.
It switches on when you press the “+” button, and switches off when you press and hold the “-” button.
The “classic” vibration and pulsing settings
Eight “classic” settings, with the intensity adjustable using the “+” and “-” buttons:
- One vibration setting,
- Three regular pulsing speeds (fairly slow, fast, very fast),
- One setting where the intensity gradually increases, then drops suddenly,
- Two “wave” settings,
- One setting alternating a big “wave” with a series of little “waves”.
I like the classic vibrations and the strange final setting best.
The “SenseTouch” mode
You switch this mode on (or off) by pressing and holding the central button for 3 to 5 seconds, until the toy’s controls start flashing.
The sex toy then becomes pressure-sensitive. The harder you press, the more intense the vibrations become. If you ease off the pressure or move away, the vibration intensity drops.
I really like this mode, for several reasons:
- When you’re feeling your fanny, you don’t necessarily want to think too hard. Reading the instructions before using a sex toy, fine. But reading them while you’re using it is out of the question! That’s why intuitive controls are so welcome.
- In general, when you’re using a vibrator and want to feel stronger vibrations, you press harder. With the Smart Wand’s “SenseTouch” mode, as soon as the pressure on the head of the sex toy increases, the vibrations increase too.
- When you’re holding the Smart Wand in your hand without touching any part of your body, the vibrations drop considerably. That makes it more comfortable to hold: no pins and needles in your fingers.
You can adjust the maximum intensity of this mode with the “+” and “-” buttons by pressing the head of the sex toy against the palm of your hand. Preferably before you start, so you don’t have to stop to adjust it.
If you leave the Smart Wand switched on in “SenseTouch” mode without using it, it switches off automatically after a minute to save battery.
The “travel lock”
Like any well-mannered, polite sex toy, the Smart Wand knows to keep quiet when it’s travelling in your luggage.
To lock it, once it’s switched off, just hold down the “+” and “-” buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds. The LED beneath the buttons, whose light can be seen through the wall of the sex toy, lights up; you can release the buttons once it goes out.
Then, before switching it on, you’ll need to do the same thing to unlock it.
And, of course, remember this feature before panicking because the sex toy won’t switch on when you press “+”.
Noise level
The Smart Wand Medium is surprisingly quiet, given the power of its vibrations.
It vibrates, so it makes a sound. But it’s quite quiet. The manufacturer states a maximum noise level of 50 db (as opposed to “under 50 db” for the Iris).
On a fairly quiet vibration setting, you can’t hear it from two metres away. The most powerful vibrations can be heard in the room, but nothing like the hellish racket of the Body Wand or the Rock Box. It’s more of an entirely acceptable “vrr!”.
Using the Smart Wand Medium
The Smart Wand Medium’s vibrations certainly aren’t as powerful as those of a Fairy (or one of its cousins) turned up to maximum. That’s true.
But they are, by far, powerful enough. More powerful than those of many vibrators. All without the noise of a rotavator, without a dangling cord, without having to be near a socket and therefore having to watch out for water, and with a small, easy-to-handle sex toy that’s nice to look at.
It’s a sex toy you can use effortlessly: in “Sense Touch” mode, just hold it against your clitoris, with a little lubricant or saliva, easing off the pressure now and then if you like, and you can have orgasm after orgasm without getting tired.
Conclusion on the Lelo Smart Wand Medium
The good points:
- It’s (very) beautiful, and looks high-quality.
- It’s simple to use, with its Sense Touch mode even sparing us the effort of pressing buttons.
- Its vibrations are powerful and effective.
- Its soft texture and flexible head feel good against the skin.
- It’s quiet (especially compared with its distant cousins, the Body Wand and the Fairy).
- It’s rechargeable.
The downsides:
- The price (nearly 100 euros), which reflects the quality of the toy, but still means you need to have a certain amount to spend.
- A cover for the charging port would have been welcome.
- If you’re looking for vibrations as brute-force powerful as the Fairy’s, for example, you could indeed be disappointed.
In short, the Smart Wand didn’t disappoint me. An excellent vibrator: pretty, practical, quiet and effective.
