Francesca Harris, an English student, created a work of art from dick pics she received on Tinder.
The Modern Male: a mosaic of penis portraits
Titled “The Modern Male”, her exhibition brings together painted “portraits” of all these penises, representations of smartphones displaying dick pics, and screenshots of Tinder conversations with the photos’ senders.
The aim of this installation is, above all, to show the abundance and accessibility of penis photos. But it also calls out the number of unsolicited dick picks women tend to receive.
Francesca did, however, ask for the photos that later made up her work.
Penis Pics Art: collages made from dick pics
Last year, Charles-Elie Chauvaux, a Belgian artist, undertook a similar project. The Penis Pics Art project brings together collages made from dick picks the artist received via the dating site Grindr.
Interviewed by Têtu magazine, the artist explains that he sees this approach as a way to make the most of the time spent on dating apps.
Unlike Francesca, Charles-Elie insists that the dick pics he uses in his works are unsolicited. However, Penis Pics Art is not intended to call out the spontaneous sending of penis photos. Indeed, according to its creator, this practice is common in the gay scene and is enjoyed by a lot of guys.
To create his collages, he draws inspiration from his own fantasies, and from his passion for the Eastern bloc and totalitarian regimes.
The artist also runs an Instagram account, unsolicited.art, where he shares a literary version of his Penis Pics Art. This one gets around the social network’s censorship while adding a poetic touch to the works.
A Lifetime of Dick Pics: an exhibition featuring dick pics
In her exhibition “I Didn’t Ask For This: A Lifetime of Dick Pics”, shown in Los Angeles last year and in San Francisco this year, activist and journalist Whitney Bell takes visitors through a room where over 200 unsolicited penis photos are gathered, which she or her friends received.
The aim of this installation: to recreate the feeling of astonishment a woman feels when receiving an unsolicited dick pic.
Interviewed by Vice, the artist explains: “It’s not hatred towards penises, nor hatred towards men. I appreciate a good dick. I just don’t appreciate the harassment.”
