Review of the Dogbud by Rosebuds, a tail plug for pet play

on

We’ve already talked about pet play on this blog: the BDSM practice in which one partner takes on the role of an animal, while the other becomes their master or mistress.

A way of life for some, just a game for others, pet play often involves an essential accessory: a tail. No, not a penis, a tail, like the kind our four-legged companions wag to show how happy they are. Getting yourself a fake tail is, of course, not an essential prerequisite for pet play, but it helps you embody the creature you’ve chosen to represent.

The Dogbud by Rosebuds, an anal plug designed for pet play

We tested the Dogbud, from the French brand Rosebuds: an anal plug with a synthetic fur tail.

Introducing the Dogbud

The Dogbud was designed by Tanya of des Anges Déchues, a BDSM shop specialising in “the world of petgirls and petboys”.

Tanya lives her life as a petgirl every day with her master, who is also her partner, and designs her brand’s accessories to suit her needs. It’s a big plus, actually: sex toys that have undergone countless trials and tweaks before going on sale must be pretty rare (I’m not talking about compliance tests for this or that standard, but tests of comfort and effectiveness for their intended purpose).

Packaging and accessories

The very carefully presented parcel containing the Dogbud came with a lovely note explaining that more luxurious packaging was planned for the near future… That said, I don’t think their packaging is bad as it is! The head of the sex toy was placed in a little velvet pouch, while the “tail” was protected by paper wrapped around it.

Unboxing the Dogbud

A second, larger pouch was also included. You can store the Dogbud in it by coiling it up, but it’s a bit of a tight fit… If you leave it like that for too long, the tail starts to hold the shape and becomes slightly “corkscrew-shaped”… Fortunately, it’s quite easy to fix.

What the Dogbud looks like

The Dogbud is very pretty, with its long, majestic, bushy tail. The model we tested has grey fur, but other colours are available: black, white, black and white, and leopard print.

Now that’s what I call a nice tail! (Yeah, OK, I’ll get my coat…)

When you unbox it, the fur is a little ruffled, because the tail was left coiled up in the parcel in a rather “uncomfortable” position… But all it takes is a quick smoothing with the palm of your hand to “comb” it back into shape. The tail is a little longer than the Tailbud (the Dogbud’s equivalent in pony play form, imitating a horse‘s tail). If you want an exact figure (Want to know the length of my tail?… All right, I promise I’ll ease up on the daft “tail” jokes…): 55 centimetres.

The insertable part is a size L Rosebud (also available in size XL). In terms of dimensions, that means: 3 centimetres in diameter at the plug’s widest point, and 7 centimetres long (34.5 cm for the bulb, 2 cm for the narrower part and 5 millimetres for the base).

A thin strip of fabric conceals the area where the anal plug and the tail meet. There’s not a spot of glue showing, nor any fastening mechanism; the join between the two parts is flawless.

Texture and materials

The tail of the Dogbud we tested is made of synthetic fur. It’s very soft to the touch. At its centre, beneath the fur, you can feel a flexible metal frame that gives the tail its shape while allowing it to move in response to the movements of the person wearing the plug.

The Dogbud and the Tailbud

There are also Dogbuds—and other tail plugs—made with real fur (note that these have never been sold on the Rosebuds website, though I don’t know the brand’s view on the subject), but as far as we’re concerned, that’s out of the question.

In case you’ve just come back from a very long stay in a cave or on Mars and have never seen a report about the cruelty involved in the fur industry (or in case you’re some sort of Cruella, but with an anal plug), here are some more arguments for choosing the synthetic version:

  • The synthetic-fur Dogbud is cheaper, and just as pretty.
  • From what I could gather from a quick Google search, fur needs complicated care, isn’t really washable, and can smell bad. The synthetic fur on the Dogbud we received, on the other hand, is completely odourless and needs no special care. If it gets covered in lube or bodily fluids, just gently shampoo the dirty areas, rinse them thoroughly, then leave the tail to air-dry.

The plug itself is made of surgical-grade stainless steel: a material that’s easy to disinfect and safe for the body.

Using the Dogbud

We practise BDSM occasionally, and for us, pet play is just one game among many… But we had a lot of fun with the Dogbud!

Inserting and wearing the plug

We already had several Rosebuds in the same size, so we weren’t surprised to find that an L (for “Large”) was a perfectly reasonable size. It goes in easily with a little lube, and once in place, the plug stays exactly where it should; it doesn’t budge.

Because of the tail, you can’t sit down while wearing the Dogbud. But that’s fine, as it’s really intended for walking on all fours… Standing up, there’s no discomfort and your movements aren’t restricted.

Is it a “good tail”?

Put like that, the question might sound obscene… “Come and see my lovely tail”…

Anyway. What do I expect from a tail plug designed for pet play? Well, first of all, for it to be “believable”… And “lively”: it needs to give the impression (to others, but also to me, wearing it) that it’s MY tail, not something I’ve nicked from some poor animal in the local natural history museum. I don’t want a limp tail hanging uselessly, or a rigid appendage sticking out between my arse cheeks…

The Dogbud, the Tailbud and the Crop Bud

As for looking like a “realistic”, lively tail, the Dogbud pulls it off beautifully: thanks to its flexible metal frame, when I shake my bum, it follows the movements of my hips while swishing about: I can wag my tail! Maybe we’ll make a little video or animated gif to show you at some point…

Note: the name makes it pretty clear that the Dogbug represents a dog’s tail, and indeed, if we have to categorise its wag, it’s more of the “happy dog” variety.

So yes, it’s a cracking tail!

Conclusion on the Dogbud

objetsdeplaisir-rosebud-plug-queue-dogbud-6The good points:

  • It’s a lovely tail! Pretty, bushy, very soft, and responsive to the movements of the person wearing it. It lives up to what I expected from a tail plug to wear during pet play.
  • The Dogbud is a Made in France sex toy.

The bad points:

  • The Dogbud is quite a niche sex toy that certainly won’t appeal to everyone… That said, I can’t find any concrete fault with it.

The Dogbud is a fun and original accessory that we enjoyed playing with. It’s both excellent quality and well suited to pet play.
